Washi no kakehashi - Kyodo Project

Washi no kakehashi (Passerelle de papier) is a woven structure made of washi yarns, a meeting point between softness and strength. It takes inspiration from the flexible architecture of traditional Japanese houses, shoji screens that define space while allowing light and air to move through. In this work, local washi material becomes more than a surface. Through weaving, yarns are bound into form and meaning. They gain a quiet rigidity: thin paper threads combine into a form that holds itself, stretched in gentle tension like a bow. The structure is both delicate and firm, light yet resilient.

The pattern, made of narrow stripes and tubular lines, echoes the patchwork of corrugated iron seen on houses in Fujiyoshida. Each line rises and falls like a small bridge, linking one element to the next, creating rhythm and relief. The bridge is both a physical state and a metaphor. Textile becomes a space of transition, not a wall or a screen, but something in between stillness and movement.

This pathway to the imaginary is a delicate link connecting spaces, self and others. It is a dialogue between cultures, an exchange of skills and expertise between Fujiyoshida's weavers and Juliette Berthonneau's vision and knowledge of textile.
